How To Help Children And Youth With Relaxation Challenges

Can’t Relax; Jumpy; Restless

Relaxation allows for better concentration, learning performance, health and successful relationships. Human bodies are designed to need more relaxation than stress. Without help, not being able to relax can lead to headaches, poor coordination, learning difficulties and physical pain. These challenges can be due to and complicated by a combination of: genetics; family patterns and family models; fear-producing and over-stimulating environments; nutritional imbalances; exposure to pollutants; and unresolved traumas, accidents and abuses of all kinds.

On Our Own We Would Try: • Pets • Less or No TV, Movies, Video/Computer Games • Replace sodas, juices, sugars, fats, fast foods with water, veggies, whole grains, nuts, protein, fruit, slow food • Long Walks/Hikes • Nature • Bedtime Stories and Chats • Wholesome Pleasures • Back Rubs and Foot Massages

For Parents: • Learning how to relax is a family affair. Relaxation takes time, so make time each day and each week. • Make a priority to take a non-structured day off each week to experience the joys of relaxation. • Avoid TV and get creative. • Deep sleep, good water, good food and daily exercise are also essential to being able to relax. • Be wary of websites offering products. Some are great, many are not. • Walking, human contact, compassion, communication, loving kindness are free and work well.
